Carnegie Crescent - Narrabundah
The existing layout and location of the house on the block has in a large way driven the design of the extension. The existing home was placed at a very awkward angle on the site and created several difficult spaces to utilise. The block is also quite small meaning that the potential for extension at ground level was heavily constrained. To best utilise the available space we decided to add a second level above the existing house that would capture views and maximise access to the desirable north east aspect.
The proposed extensions have been aligned with the existing residence in an effort to create a building that will appear as if it were not an extension at all, rather an entire new home. The upper floor extension utilises a change in material to timber cladding to integrate the extension and existing lower floor.
Within the home, well defined yet subtle zones have been created. The upper floor is a light, spacious and private parent’s area with a leafy outlook. Downstairs, a children’s zone has been created at the rear of the home where bedrooms, rumpus room and connections to the rear yard via a large deck come together. The front of the home is the shared meeting place for the family consisting of open plan kitchen, dining and family room spaces.
