Monico Residence – Duffy

“Dear Adam

You’ve given us a lovely home!

Firstly, I love the way you listened to us.

When we requested that the house have overtones of Frank Lloyd Wright, we were unsure of just “what”, but with the stone wall and casing on the chimney, the long low lines, voila! there it was!  I love the way the house hugs the block and looks as if it has always been there.  Whilst new, the house has a sense of permanence about it.

The way it is sited on the block takes advantage of the lovely views north and south and it is really something being able to see these views from everywhere in the house.  After selling the farm, we were worried about being “confined” in suburbia, but the design of the house means that from just about everywhere, one looks out – to views of the city, the lake, Black Mountain and Woden, or onto courtyards and the garden, so one’s eyes are not meeting walls, but rather the “outside” and beyond the house.

John loves sitting in his comfy chair and watching the sunrise each morning: the same spot affords great views of the sparkling lights of the city at night.

We love the light!

The windows in the lounge provide the most wonderful play of light in the living areas throughout the day and into the soft light of evening.  In summer it has been 8-8.30pm before we’ve needed to switch on lighting.

We love the space!

The open plan living area works well for us and we love having the kitchen part of it: when we have guests, everyone is together.  Lexie’s thoughtful design of the kitchen means that we can work easily together, without getting in each others way.  The flow of people traffic works well in the house, be it just the two of us or when we have guests.

It is great to wake up in the master bedroom, with the morning sun streaming through the curtains: again the light is wonderful.

John summed it up pretty well when he said “The house just FEELS good!”

Thank you for getting it so right!”
